Medicare Supplements

Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap) fill in the gaps, or costs, leftover from Original Medicare. Some of these gaps include deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, and excess charges.

How Do They Work?

You must first be enrolled in both Part A and Part B (Original Medicare), then you can enroll in a Medicare Supplement Plan. This is known as the Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period and you have six months from the time you have Part B coverage to choose a plan. This is a one-time enrollment period where you will not be turned down due to health reasons or charged a higher premium.

When you receive healthcare services, your bill will first be sent to Medicare. Medicare will pay its share, which will roughly be about 80% of the costs. The rest of the costs will be sent to your Medicare Supplement Plan. Your plan may pay most, if not all of the costs. What the supplement plan does not pay will be left to you to pay out-of-pocket.

The ten Medicare Supplement Plans are labeled as A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N, and they all offer specific coverage. However, take note that Plans C and F are not available to those who became eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2020.
